This nearly 200-year-old hotel held layers of history in its original wallpaper, with over 65 different patterns throughout the building. The owner carefully removed it by hand, salvaging as much as possible and framing many pieces to display as artwork throughout the remodeled space. When she had used all she could, she still couldn’t bear to see the remaining wallpaper go to waste and planned to donate it to local artists.

With dozens of unique patterns still left, we saw an opportunity others might overlook. Instead of letting the wallpaper leave the building, we proposed using the remaining pieces as backgrounds for custom magnets—small, functional items that could carry the hotel’s history in an unexpected way. So we created a few finished samples to show what was possible.

Once she saw the completed magnets, she asked us to make as many as we could with the remaining wallpaper. What began as leftover material became a collection of meaningful keepsakes—each one preserving a different piece of the hotel’s story in a form no one had originally imagined. No two are exactly alike, and they are available to purchase in their hotel so guests can take a piece of the history home with them.
